When you walk into Rob Thompson’s office, you will notice a row of baseball caps lined up neatly on the shelf behind his desk. That choice of decoration is a great example of what he does. He is a man who wears many hats, and a man who fulfills many different responsibilities at ��ԭ��. In addition to being MBU’s Athletic Director, Rob Thompson holds several other titles, such as: NCCAA North Region Coordinator NCCAA National 1st Vice President NCCAA Board of Directors NCCAA Administration Committee Indian Trails Conference President (Academy Conference) Chair of MBU Coaches Committee Chair of MBU Athletics Committee MBU Assistant Women’s Basketball Coach MBU Head Softball Coach MBU Leadership Council Member What exactly do you do as Athletic Director? As athletic director, I am in charge of the ten teams at MBU, and the four teams at ��ԭ�� Baptist Academy. I coordinate the game schedules and practice times. I am also in charge of the gym, the soccer fields, the Division Street field, and the quad. MBU Hosts Dan Litchfield Director of Project Development for Invenergy

April 4, 2019, ��ԭ�� hosted the last business breakfast of the academic year. There were more than 100 people in attendance. We were excited that Wisconsin Supreme Court Justice, Daniel Kelly, was one of those attending the event. Dan Litchfield, Director of Project Development for Invenergy, spoke to a major topic of our time, renewable energy. Litchfield is a solar farmer and boasts 12 years of experience with wind energy and 3 years with solar energy. Invenergy is currently preparing to begin construction of the Sinnissippi Solar Farm project in Jefferson County, WI. The word Sinissippi is the Indian name for the Rock River which flows through Wisconsin and Illinois, ending at the Mississippi River, thus having a significant impact on Watertown. Litchfield’s presentation focused on the advantages—to the power grid, businesses, and consumers—of installing a solar farm. These advantages include the increased cost productivity, added economic value, and advanced technology of solar energy production. Cost Productivity Litchfield explained that the cost of buying solar panels is declining. This allows Invenergy to buy more panels at a lower cost. Staff Highlight: Caron Manion

A lone candy wrapper lies on the gym hallway. No one seems to see it—until Caron Manion walks past the wrapper, spots it instantly, and swoops down to pick it up and to throw it away. Meet Caron Manion, MBU custodial staff and cleaner extraordinaire. As a child growing up, Caron and her family were Catholics. But as an eighteen-year-old cook who was working at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, she knew that something was missing from her life. “I had been searching for something,” Caron said. At the time, her cousin attended Faith Baptist Church in La Crosse. A ride was arranged, and Caron started going to a Bible-believing church. At the end of the first service, she raised her hand at the invitation. The person who brought her to church noticed her raised hand and led her to the Lord that night. Through faithfully sharing the gospel with her parents, two brothers, and sister, they became believers too. But God was not done working with her yet. MBU Welcomes New CFO, Mr. Don Donovan

We’d like to welcome our newest staff member and his family to the MBU team. MBU News recently interviewed Mr. Don Donovan, who joins us from New England and officially steps into his role as ��ԭ��’s Vice President of Business Affairs and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in January. Where are you from originally? I was born and raised in Connecticut. I am thankful for my Christian education, having attended and graduated from Emmanuel Christian Academy. I attended college locally, graduating from Central Connecticut State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. What are some highlights of your professional career? I began my career at KPMG, one of the “Big Four” independent accounting firms, where I earned my CPA designation while working on a variety of audit engagements including clients in the real estate, banking, government, and not-for-profit sectors. Then, after several years at an insurance company, I worked for the last 21 years for UBS Realty, a real estate investment management firm based in Hartford, Connecticut. Faculty Highlight: Dr. David Brown

When you walk into Dr. Brown’s office, you will notice that attached to his desk is a piano keyboard. An unusual attachment to a desk, until you realize that Dr. Brown has a doctorate in conducting. So, take a seat with me, pull up your coffee, and read about one of MBU’s music faculty – Dr. David Brown. How did you become interested in your field? Well, I always knew I was going to be involved in music somehow. As I got into high school, around 10th and 11th grade, a calling to pursue music became clearer as I was excelling in band and in choir. I also had a lot of good and godly people in my life who were recommending that I major in music when I go to college, so I thought it was a good idea to listen to their counsel. What is your educational background? I went to a big public school in Philadelphia. In fact, there were a thousand seniors in my high school class. So yeah, it was a big school. MBU Hosts Sandi Lybert and Katie Westerman for a Community Business Breakfast

��ԭ�� recently hosted the last business breakfast of 2018. Sandi Lybert and Katie Westerman from Your Choice to Live spoke in an hour-long presentation regarding the prevention of drug abuse. The agenda for the meeting was three-fold: Examples of concealment of drugs Signs and symptoms of drug abuse Proactive parenting Lybert began the presentation by showing the audience different concealment methods students use to hide drugs. The secret storage containers included were everyday items like water bottles (for vodka), highlighters (for cannabis pipes), and Carmex containers (for weed). In addition to these common items, Lybert presented more specialized containers like Motrin bottles that were hollowed out on the bottom to store drugs and sunscreen tubes that can hold alcohol. Westerman then went through the visible signs and symptoms of drug abuse. Before discussing symptoms, Westerman listed the most frequently abused substances: Alcohol Vaporizer liquids Marijuana Prescription pills Heroin She provided some tips on proactive parenting: Have a positive relationship Model good decision-making Ask yourself: How do I handle my own stress Know your child’s risk Monitor, supervise, and set boundaries Whether young people either witness loved ones going through drug abuse or struggle with drug addiction themselves, many helpful […]

Faculty Highlight: David Madsen, MBU English Professor

What was supposed to be an invigorating walk near the Moody Bible Institute turned into a nightmare for David and Melissa Madsen. But God is never surprised by anything that happens. Instead, He used a near-death experience to direct a family in the way He wanted, and to ultimately impact students’ lives across America. Mr. Madsen writes, “God certainly works all things for good—even near-death experiences. My wife, Melissa, and I had met in Bible college. One day, she told me she had a P.E. class assignment in which she had to walk and raise her heart rate several times. The college was in downtown Chicago, and after supper, we took a walk in the city blocks around the campus to complete the assignment.” “By the time we finished and were headed back to campus, the sun had gone down, and a heavy rain began to fall. We were within a few minutes of the campus, leisurely walking across a busy intersection on a ‘walk signal,’ when a sports car zoomed around the corner and hit us, our bodies ricocheting off the car and into the street. The Internship Experiment: Leah Pierce's Dentistry Internship

As any recent college graduate can confirm, job hunting isn’t easy. In today’s competitive market, a degree is no longer enough—employers want candidates with experience in their respective fields. For many college students, including MBU senior Leah Pierce, an internship has been a valuable way to obtain the experience needed for a successful future. Right Place, Perfect Time As a Biology: Pre-Medical student approaching the end of her college career, Pierce knew an internship would be critical to her future career. Even though just about any internship boosts a resume, field-specific internships are the most valuable because they help answer the question “Is this really what I want to do with my life?” Given her interest in dentistry (specifically, oral pathology), she decided a dental internship would be a logical step for her. Grove Dental Associates in Downers Grove, Illinois, was her first choice for an internship. As she discovered, however, this position wasn’t easy to get. “I actually applied for this internship for four years in a row.
