The decision of where to attend college is one of the most important decisions your child will ever make. This decision will frame your child’s future, establish what worldview they adopt, what spiritual emphasis will be the foundation of their future, what leadership opportunities in a Christian atmosphere will enrich their lives, what long-lasting friendships will be built, and likely who they will choose for a mate. The following are common questions or discussions that arise as I talk to parents. I trust that these will assist you as you seek a place of education for your child. Choosing a College Why choose ��ԭ��? My husband and I initially encouraged our children to come to ��ԭ�� for specific reasons: godly leadership that maintains a strong doctrinal position, proper worldview, outstanding academics with top accreditation to prepare for their futures, small-college atmosphere much like a family, not an institution, more leadership opportunities, and the reputation of the university itself. So, you’re on your way to finishing high school and decisions about the future are looming. No doubt one of the options you have considered is college. Incredible options are available to you, but we also know that higher education isn’t your only choice these days. In recent years, the idea that college is the first step to a successful and financially stable life has been challenged. College once seemed to be a “no-brainer,” but now there are numerous options as you begin the next chapter of your life. So, as a smart soon-to-be high school graduate, you have to weigh those options, including their pros and cons. Many colleges will give you the same pros for college you’ve heard over and over. College graduates earn more on average, you get better opportunities, you can expand your horizons, the list could go on. While all those reasons are true, they might not speak to your reasons for considering college. But these might. Go to college if you don’t know what you want to be when you grow up. S.M.A.R.T. Goals

“I set myself some really good goals for this year.” How many times have you heard this (or something like this) from someone you are close to since the start of the new year? Maybe you even said it yourself. Let’s face it, new year goals and resolutions have become the laughingstock of most people. Why though? New year resolutions and goals have become such a laughing stock to many people because people frequently make ambitious goals for their new year and then give up week three of the new year. Unfortunately, just because people set a goal doesn’t mean they’ll achieve it. The goals you set are often just as important as the work you put in. For example, if I am someone who has never consistently worked out, my goal should not be to “work out more.” Does that mean you will work out once this year? That would be more than you did last year? Do you see where this can become a problem. Other similar goals you will hear are: “to lose weight”, “to communicate better”, “read my Bible more”, or “get better grades”. These are not what we call S.M.A.R.T. goals. A Unique Culture Leads to a Unique Ministry

Off-season weight training, futsal, and spring season are all things you would expect to find a NCAA DIII soccer program having during its off-season months. For the Men’s Soccer Team at ��ԭ��, the off-season looks pretty similar to other soccer programs across the U.S. in some ways, but with one big difference. They sing together. The “Tonal Defenders”, now in its eighth year, is a group entirely comprised of the student-athletes and staff of the MBU Men’s Soccer Team that rehearses music and ministers to churches during the off-season in song and soccer clinics. For many, a soccer team singing together in the off-season wouldn’t make much sense. However, after some insight into the history of the Men’s Soccer Program at ��ԭ��, this type of ministry becomes more understandable. Three ways finals are better at MBU

a sneak peek into finals week at ��ԭ�� It’s that time of year again: exam week. It has been a terrific semester here at ��ԭ�� for the faculty and students alike. We’ve seen everything from a tight final women’s Soccer game to over 50 visitors coming to campus on MBU’s Road Trip, and from a campus-wide version of the Amazing Race to a spectacular production of A Christmas Carol. At most colleges and universities, there is a set schedule for when each final will be taken. There may be a brief open time to allow for conflicts, but generally speaking, you will take your exams when they are scheduled, even if you have to take several finals during several consecutive class periods. Seeking to be at the forefront in educational innovation, MBU has a different, more unusual approach to the way we do final exams. We call it, “open finals.” Here’s how it works: Finals begin Monday morning at 7:30 AM and run all day till 7:30 PM. A college degree is the new high school diploma, and more and more students are going after a Master’s degree. Many colleges all over the country have taken part in the dual enrollment program, which is awesome for the 21st century student. What is the point of taking dual enrollment courses? You may even be thinking “What is dual enrollment?!” and “Why does this sound so scary?” Why is dual enrollment the Next Big Thing? Dual Enrollment: Explained To begin, dual enrollment is a program offered to Juniors and Seniors in high school to begin taking college classes while still in high school and receive credit at both the high school and college levels. ��ԭ��’s Community Breakfast Series

Last Thursday morning, ��ԭ��’s Dining Room was filled with students, staff, faculty members, and members of the local community to learn more about the state of Wisconsin’s economic marketing efforts. Tricia Braun, COO of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation, presented “In Wisconsin”; an effort to “Think-Make-Happen” in Wisconsin; focused on recruiting industry and workforce to our state. Students can be seen sitting next to business owners and Watertown leaders alike while eating breakfast before and during the speaker’s presentation. After the speakers are done, conversations spring up around the room and continue for a good amount of time. Ms. Braun’s presentation was a continuation of a series of “Community Breakfast” that ��ԭ�� has hosted on its campus. Since the spring of 2013, Steve Board, MBU Director of Development, has worked with the school of Business and community leaders to recruit guest speakers to the MBU campus. Why do we have these “Community Breakfasts” as Mr. Board likes to call them? We are almost done with our first week of classes here at ��ԭ��. What a week it has been! We have enjoyed special revival services with Mike and Mark Herbster, we have welcomed our freshman with copious amounts of syllabi, and we have seen campus get back to “normal” for the school year. Many freshman students probably are exiting this week thinking “what have I gotten myself into?” College comes at you quick, fast, and in a hurry sometimes if you were honest with yourself. Don’t worry, freshman, we’ve got your back with 6 tips to facing this year and making it the best of your educational career. Ask lots of questions This is the first tip because it is the simplest tip to do, yet most people are afraid to do it. Every person at college has been where the freshman currently are. You are new. You aren’t going to know everything about college, dorm life, or the surrounding area. So don’t wander around college like a middle-aged man who won’t ask for directions and just ask! Preseason is Here

The two-week preseason for men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball starts today for the ��ԭ�� teams! This is a favorite time for many students who commit to being fall athletes. I talked to several of the head coaches of the teams and the athletic director of MBU to get their input on preseason: When asked what her favorite aspect of preseason was, Coach DeLozier (Women’s Volleyball) said, “Having all the ladies together without the pressure of classes and assignments allows extra time to get to know each other and build team unity. It allows us a special time of bonding, sharing God’s Word, and serving others, all while getting our team prepared to start the season.” This sentiment was shared by all those who responded. Mainly, the coaching staff looked forward to the focused time that they get to share with their team before all of the distractions of school life come. Goals play a huge role in preseason.
