Freshman Mary Ann Lazzell, Lead Actor in the Fall Play, is the Busiest Student on Campus

Contributed by Hunter Weakley, MBU Freshman Mary Ann Lazzell walked into practice excited, prepared, and with a smile. Yet as rehearsal commenced, she also felt a bit nervous. Though she was ready for this first practice, she wasn’t sure what Mr. Robertson, the director, would say. She took a deep breath and got into character. Mary Ann Lazzell, the lead actor in this fall’s production of the world’s longest running play, The Mousetrap, has been busy preparing to transform herself into the wide-eyed, sensitive character Mollie Ralston, all while balancing her studies, work, music practice, and social life. The Production Itself Under the direction of Stephen Robertson, the cast and crew for this fall’s production were hard at work for nearly a month. “The play really is on schedule,” Robertson says. “It is slower than I would like, but I also don’t remember a time when it wasn’t like that. It really is on schedule.” For Mary Ann, this schedule included three-hour practices four times a week, not including the memorization and outside work required to make practices efficient. MBU Welcomes New Nursing Faculty

WATERTOWN, Wis., July 19, 2024—��ԭ��’s School of Nursing is delighted to introduce both Dr. Sarah Urban and Mrs. Birgitta Donovan, who will be joining the nursing faculty this fall. Dr. Urban brings with her a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to nursing education based on a Christian worldview. She has more than fourteen years of dedicated service in the field of nursing. She is a Certified Nurse Educator with experience teaching Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) courses. Her career has included service as a registered nurse, nurse educator, and nursing department chair/director. Although much of her career as an educator has focused on teaching and leadership, Dr. Urban values both scholarship and research. While mentoring students, faculty, and fellow nurses, she has emphasized research-informed, critically reflective nursing practice which has helped her be successful in a variety of educational and clinical environments. Dr. David Oliver Named Chairman of the Board of Trustees

WATERTOWN, Wis., July 3, 2024 — On June 7, 2024, Dr. David Oliver, Pastor of Ashley Baptist Church in Belding, Michigan was unanimously voted in as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the third such person to hold the office in the school’s 56-year history. His predecessor, Dr. Doug Jackson of Saginaw, Michigan, announced his retirement earlier this year, after serving 30+ years as Chairman. A board member for ten years before becoming Chairman, Dr. Jackson served ��ԭ�� with steadfast direction for four decades, exhibiting outstanding leadership and unwavering support in both the best and worst of times. As one of the few remaining board members to have personally known all of ��ԭ��’s presidents, his breadth of knowledge provided an invaluable perspective for the Board, enabling it to steward the institution’s resources well. Dr. Jackson brought discipline and clarity in the decision-making process and was a constant champion of MBU’s values and purpose. Raymond Steinbart Retiring

WATERTOWN, Wis., June 28, 2024—After twenty-two years of service at ��ԭ��, Raymond Steinbart is retiring. Before joining ��ԭ�� in 2002, Steinbart had retired from 24 years of active duty at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Reflecting on his transition, he shares, “Upon my retirement from the Army, the Lord opened up a position at ��ԭ��, fulfilling a desire to become involved in some sort of full-time Christian service.” Originally hired as an Information Technology Office Help Desk worker, Steinbart’s role expanded as the university’s technological needs evolved and his skills proved in demand. When MBU began providing virtual classes in earnest in 2008, Steinbart stepped in as virtual Classroom Admin and teacher for the School of Applied Science. His versatility and expertise played a vital role in ensuring the smooth operation of MBU’s technological infrastructure, impacting the daily lives of students, faculty, and staff. Beyond his technical responsibilities, Steinbart’s commitment to ministry and service have challenged both co-workers and students. He serves as deacon, treasurer, and junior church worker in his local church, celebrated his 49th wedding anniversary in May, and is grandfather to fourteen (almost fifteen). Higher Learning Commission Reaffirms ��ԭ�� Accreditation for next 10 Years

Watertown, WI (March 4, 2024) – ��ԭ�� announces that the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has reaffirmed its accreditation for the next 10 years. This decision follows a comprehensive review process conducted by an HLC review team culminating in a vote last week by the HLC Institutional Actions Council (IAC). The IAC also recognized MBU’s eligibility for the HLC’s Open Pathway, a designation reserved for institutions with a well-established record of strong operational practices and a commitment to continuous improvement. “We are grateful to the Lord for guiding us through this successful accreditation process,” said Dr. Matthew Davis, CEO of ��ԭ��. “The dedication of our faculty and staff to providing a high-quality education for our students was instrumental in achieving this important milestone. Each year, a new group of faculty, staff, and students are welcomed to the ��ԭ�� family. At the same time, parents and students are starting to think about college more intentionally. Usually, they are familiar with our community through the experience of alumni, pastors, or friends. So, becoming a part of this intricate machine, whether on campus or virtual has a relationship to thank for its beginning. This is the way we like it. In this edition of the Advantage, you are going to explore the heartbeat of the ministry. But before you immerse yourself in stories of God’s grace or alumni faithfulness, let us direct your attention back to why ��ԭ�� exists. WATERTOWN, Wis., May 15, 2023—Dr. David Anderson, currently senior pastor of Heritage Baptist Church of Roscoe, Illinois, has been named the sixth president of ��ԭ��. He will take office on August 1, 2023, in preparation for the fall semester. Dr. Anderson will succeed Dr. Marty Marriott who has served as the school’s president since 2009 and was named chancellor at the MBU commencement program on May 5. The board appointed Dr. Anderson as president at its meeting on Thursday, May 11. “With unity, confidence and great enthusiasm, the ��ԭ�� board of trustees voted unanimously to call Dr. David Anderson to serve as MBU’s new president,” said Dr. Doug Jackson, chairman of ��ԭ��’s board of trustees. “As president, we believe he will successfully carry out our mission, minister effectively to our students and staff and serve as the public face of our university—the chief student recruiter and promoter of ��ԭ��.” Dr. Anderson first graduated from MBU in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in Bible, Pastoral Studies, and Sacred Music. ��ԭ�� Appoints Dr. Marty Marriott Second Chancellor in School History WATERTOWN, Wis., May 5, 2023—��ԭ�� in Watertown, Wisconsin, has appointed Dr. Marty Marriott, its current president, to the position of chancellor of the university. Dr. Matthew Davis, ��ԭ��’s chief executive officer, announced the change at the close of the school’s commencement program on May 5. Dr. Robert Loggans, a member of the board of trustees executive committee, offered a public prayer of dedication during the event as Dr. Marriott assumes this important new role. Dr. Marriott’s appointment marks the second time in the school’s 55-year history that a chancellor has been appointed. ��ԭ��’s founder, Dr. B. Myron Cedarholm, is the only other individual to hold the distinguished title. According to the university’s bylaws, the chancellor must be an individual who formerly served as either the president or CEO. The chancellor’s duties include offering counsel to the CEO and president, assisting in campus ministry, providing historical perspective to the board of trustees, and maintaining established relationships with university constituency. Announcing the 2021 Concerto Competition Winners

��ԭ�� offers musicians a variety of opportunities to compete and showcase their musical talents. On Tuesday, students competed in MBU’s annual Concerto Competition, an event open to all instrumentalists, pianists, and vocalists. Winner ��ԭ��’s Music Department announces Allison Morken as the 2021 Concerto Competition Winner. Accompanied by Miss Emily Kindstedt, Morken performed the Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor, K. 466, II. Romance by W.A. Mozart. Adjudicator, Carl Rasmussen, remarked, “Allison couldn’t have played Mozart better.” Allie will be awarded a $100 cash prize and the opportunity to perform her piece during the spring band and orchestra concert. Runner Up Congratulations to Joel Montgomery, the runner up of this year’s competition who will receive a $25 cash prize. Montgomery played Oskar Böhme’s Trumpet Concerto, Op. 18, III. Guest Recitals Inspire Audiences

��ԭ�� recently hosted two guest recitals that inspired the audiences. Tenor Dr. Philip Gingery, collaborating with Christa Habegger on piano, featured various classical art song selections. Tatiana Pearson and Louis Cucunato’s recital, on the other hand, featured a mixture of traditional and modern works arranged for flute and guitar. Phil Gingery—Tenor Dr. Philip Gingery of West Chester, Pennsylvania, presents vocal recitals at ��ԭ�� every Fall. Gingery’s programs are musically unique and often have a distinctive, spiritual focus. Gingery’s sister, Christa Habegger, accompanied the recital beautifully. Freshman music major Charis Dwire appreciated that Gingery’s recital had something to offer for everyone. “I have never been to a recital exclusively featuring voice,” commented Dwire, “it was great to have that exposure, and I really enjoyed the experience!” For the past thirty years, Gingery has served as assistant pastor and minister of music at Bible Baptist Church and West Chester Christian School. Additionally, he teaches hymnology, theory, music history, voice, and conducting at various colleges.
