This decision follows a comprehensive review process conducted by an HLC review team culminating in a vote last week by the HLC Institutional Actions Council (IAC). The IAC also recognized MBU’s eligibility for the HLC’s Open Pathway, a designation reserved for institutions with a well-established record of strong operational practices and a commitment to continuous improvement. “We are grateful to the Lord for guiding us through this successful accreditation process,” said Dr. Matthew Davis, CEO of 海角原创. “The dedication of our faculty and staff to providing a high-quality education for our students was instrumental in achieving this important milestone. Accreditation is not the ultimate mark of approval for a Christian college as we seek to please the Lord first and foremost in every facet of the ministry. But this reaffirmation does provide an objective measure of the high value of a 海角原创 degree for its students and graduates who can rely upon the consistent quality and proven expertise of the institution and its faculty.” This reaffirmation of accreditation ensures that MBU’s degrees are […]

An Excellent Education /advantage/an-excellent-education/ Mon, 01 Jan 2024 20:14:27 +0000 /?p=141751 海角原创 is an institutionally accredited member of The Higher Learning Commission, one of six accrediting organizations in the United States. After 30 years of membership, it might be easy to take accreditation for granted and forget the pathway we have traveled and the blessings we have inherited by God鈥檚 gracious hand. So, let鈥檚 raise an Ebenezer, remember the journey, and praise God.[1]   When 海角原创 was founded in 1968, no one thought about academic accreditation. In fact, according to former Academic VP Dr. John Brock, essentially no one at the time thought it was a good idea for a conservative Baptist institution to become accredited by a secular organization.[2]   But as 海角原创 entered the 1980s, the landscape began to change. 海角原创鈥檚 administration began to explore the benefits of some type of academic accreditation, and a seven-year journey to institutional accreditation commenced in 1987.[3]聽 At first, progress was slow, and many forms of accreditation were explored. 海角原创鈥檚 Board of Trustees and 海角原创 alumni needed to be reassured that the pursuit of outside accreditation would not lead to institutional compromise or the surrender of biblical principles. At times, sister institutions did not understand 海角原创鈥檚 intentions.[4]   But in January […]

Online and Distance Learning Continues to Grow /higher-education/online-growth/ Thu, 11 Mar 2021 17:28:17 +0000 /?p=117961 For more than a decade, 海角原创鈥檚 online program has grown and continues to be influential to many students鈥 lives. Dana Davis, Assistant Vice President of Online and Distance Learning (ODL), says that the program 鈥渉as grown from offering just a handful of courses to now offering 11 undergraduate degree programs, 4 graduate degree programs, and 7 seminary programs that can be completed from a distance.鈥 In 2020, BestColleges.com ranked 海角原创 as the #2 college in Wisconsin, based on its academic quality, affordability, and flexibility. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked 海角原创鈥檚 online bachelor program as #36 in the Midwest. A key benefit that has contributed to 海角原创鈥檚 online success is its dual-enrollment offerings that high school students are able to take before becoming on-campus students. Another reason that 海角原创鈥檚 online program has thrived is because of its conservative worldview. Davis adds, 鈥淥DL helps to extend the mission of MBU to students located all across the country and around the world. Students who are unable to physically attend our Watertown campus can still earn a regionally accredited Christ-centered university education, learn from highly-qualified professors, and experience a supportive learning community of like-minded students.鈥 海角原创鈥檚 […]

Teaching: More Than a Job /student-interests/teaching-more-than-a-job/ Tue, 01 Dec 2020 17:41:48 +0000 /?p=114831 Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with Dr.聽Annette聽Thompson, a local superintendent of a school that has partnered with 海角原创鈥檚 School of Education by hosting teachers in training for fieldwork, observation, and student teaching placement. We discussed a variety of topics from shifts in education to the building project Dodgeland is undertaking.聽Three big ideas stand out in my mind聽as I look back: there is a need in education today, teaching is a calling, and聽faithful educators are a gift from God.聽聽 How many times have you heard the phrase, 鈥渨hen I was in X grade,聽my teacher聽(insert ancient-sounding聽name) told me I could be a (whatever聽the speaker now excels at)?鈥澛燤any biographies begin with the account of how a coach, mentor, parent, or teacher聽took the聽adolescent star聽aside one day to impart聽a聽piece of wisdom that sticks with them to this day.聽We respect teachers聽so much that聽we acknowledge them聽in our published works.聽Some parents even name their children after their favorite聽middle-school math teacher that took pity on them in a time of panic.聽聽 Why is this normal?聽Because teachers are leaders.聽Teachers inspire. Social Media Deplatforming and the Law /mbu-news/social-media-deplatforming-and-the-law/ Wed, 03 Jun 2020 21:06:18 +0000 /?p=109124 Recent events have highlighted the very real dangers to online viewpoint expression represented by the editorial actions of major social media platforms. The power of words to influence (for good or evil) underscores the importance of God鈥檚 people graciously engaging the culture with wisdom and discretion. I wrote this article for the American Association of Christian Schools鈥櫬燡ournal of Christian Education聽in the fall of 2019. It provides what I hope will be a helpful overview of the dangers of private companies censoring speech online as well as the pitfalls of government intervention. There are no easy answers! President Trump recently issued an聽Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship (May 28, 2020). Of particular note, the EO signals the administration鈥檚 position that CDA Section 230 (discussed in detail below) 鈥渋mmunity should not extend beyond its text and purpose to provide protection for those who purport to provide users a forum for free and open speech, but in reality use their power over a vital means of communication to engage in deceptive or pretextual actions stifling free and open debate by censoring certain viewpoints.鈥 Special thanks to the AACS for permission to republish this article on the MBU website. -Dr. Matt Davis 6/1/2020 Social […]

Advance to College from Your High School /prospective-students/advance-to-college-from-your-high-school/ Fri, 01 May 2020 19:41:04 +0000 /?p=107830 These days, there鈥檚 a big push for dual-enrollment and Advanced Placement courses once students reach high school. If you are a high school student, perhaps you are taking dual-credit classes. Maybe you are a parent or administrator desiring to help your students 鈥済et ahead鈥 in their college careers. Some of you are probably taking the dual-enrollment route through another university while others have gone with AP classes. Both are fantastic tracks and help boost the academic level at your school. But there could be a better option for your school. Better? Yes. Better. Often times, dual-credit options can get expensive and annoying. Students may have to leave their school campus to go to the local community college where they learn from new teachers. As an administrator, you want to ensure the academic excellence for your students, but you also wish your students could take these classes from your own teachers. 聽 MBU wants to equip Christian schools around the nation with a higher level education option, but without the hoops, testing, and off-site classes. To meet this need, MBU has crafted the Advance To College Program designed to provide affordable college-credit taught by your own Christian School faculty. What is […]

Explaining Faith to a Believing World /higher-education/explaining-faith-to-a-believing-world/ Tue, 31 Mar 2020 15:27:25 +0000 /?p=105890 David Saxon is a professor in the College of Bible and Church Ministries. As the teacher of Baptist Heritage and a number of Bible electives, he enjoys interaction with a significant percentage of the 海角原创 student body. Read his article, originally published in the 2019 Advantage Magazine. American Spirituality A Gallup poll published this year reveals that church attendance in the United States has dropped in the last 20 by about 20%, resulting in the lowest percentage of church attenders since Gallup began collecting data in the 1930s. A natural conclusion might be that faith is failing in America: nearly one in five respondents indicated no connection to organized religion of any kind, a significant increase from any previous poll. Interestingly, though, Pew Research Center published poll results in 2017 that showed that 27% of Americans reported that they are 鈥渟piritual鈥 but unaffiliated with any religion, a substantial increase over previous results. It seems that many Americans are redefining spirituality as a purely personal, existential experience that has no need of religious or ecclesiastical underpinnings. In fact, one wonders if this spirituality even needs God. This trend is evident in the contemporary use of the concept of 鈥渇aith.鈥 Oddly enough, […]
