Higher Learning Commission Reaffirms ��ԭ�� Accreditation for next 10 Years

Watertown, WI (March 4, 2024) – ��ԭ�� announces that the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has reaffirmed its accreditation for the next 10 years. This decision follows a comprehensive review process conducted by an HLC review team culminating in a vote last week by the HLC Institutional Actions Council (IAC). The IAC also recognized MBU’s eligibility for the HLC’s Open Pathway, a designation reserved for institutions with a well-established record of strong operational practices and a commitment to continuous improvement. “We are grateful to the Lord for guiding us through this successful accreditation process,” said Dr. Matthew Davis, CEO of ��ԭ��. “The dedication of our faculty and staff to providing a high-quality education for our students was instrumental in achieving this important milestone. An Excellent Education

��ԭ�� is an institutionally accredited member of The Higher Learning Commission, one of six accrediting organizations in the United States. After 30 years of membership, it might be easy to take accreditation for granted and forget the pathway we have traveled and the blessings we have inherited by God’s gracious hand. So, let’s raise an Ebenezer, remember the journey, and praise God.[1] When ��ԭ�� was founded in 1968, no one thought about academic accreditation. In fact, according to former Academic VP Dr. John Brock, essentially no one at the time thought it was a good idea for a conservative Baptist institution to become accredited by a secular organization.[2] But as ��ԭ�� entered the 1980s, the landscape began to change. ��ԭ��’s administration began to explore the benefits of some type of academic accreditation, and a seven-year journey to institutional accreditation commenced in 1987.[3] At first, progress was slow, and many forms of accreditation were explored. ��ԭ��’s Board of Trustees and ��ԭ�� alumni needed to be reassured that the pursuit of outside accreditation would not lead to institutional compromise or the surrender of biblical principles. Online and Distance Learning Continues to Grow

For more than a decade, ��ԭ��’s online program has grown and continues to be influential to many students’ lives. Dana Davis, Assistant Vice President of Online and Distance Learning (ODL), says that the program “has grown from offering just a handful of courses to now offering 11 undergraduate degree programs, 4 graduate degree programs, and 7 seminary programs that can be completed from a distance.” In 2020, BestColleges.com ranked ��ԭ�� as the #2 college in Wisconsin, based on its academic quality, affordability, and flexibility. U.S. News and World Report recently ranked ��ԭ��’s online bachelor program as #36 in the Midwest. Teaching: More Than a Job

Recently, I had the opportunity to talk with Dr. Annette Thompson, a local superintendent of a school that has partnered with ��ԭ��’s School of Education by hosting teachers in training for fieldwork, observation, and student teaching placement. We discussed a variety of topics from shifts in education to the building project Dodgeland is undertaking. Three big ideas stand out in my mind as I look back: there is a need in education today, teaching is a calling, and faithful educators are a gift from God. How many times have you heard the phrase, “when I was in X grade, my teacher (insert ancient-sounding name) told me I could be a (whatever the speaker now excels at)?” Many biographies begin with the account of how a coach, mentor, parent, or teacher took the adolescent star aside one day to impart a piece of wisdom that sticks with them to this day. We respect teachers so much that we acknowledge them in our published works. Some parents even name their children after their favorite middle-school math teacher that took pity on them in a time of panic. Why is this normal? Because teachers are leaders. Teachers inspire. Teachers are a quiet force to be reckoned with. My mother is a teacher. My wife is a teacher. Teachers are everywhere, and they never stop being teachers. The Need In a […]

Social Media Deplatforming and the Law

Recent events have highlighted the very real dangers to online viewpoint expression represented by the editorial actions of major social media platforms. The power of words to influence (for good or evil) underscores the importance of God’s people graciously engaging the culture with wisdom and discretion. I wrote this article for the American Association of Christian Schools’ Journal of Christian Education in the fall of 2019. It provides what I hope will be a helpful overview of the dangers of private companies censoring speech online as well as the pitfalls of government intervention. There are no easy answers! President Trump recently issued an Executive Order on Preventing Online Censorship (May 28, 2020). Advance to College from Your High School

These days, there’s a big push for dual-enrollment and Advanced Placement courses once students reach high school. If you are a high school student, perhaps you are taking dual-credit classes. Maybe you are a parent or administrator desiring to help your students “get ahead” in their college careers. Some of you are probably taking the dual-enrollment route through another university while others have gone with AP classes. Both are fantastic tracks and help boost the academic level at your school. But there could be a better option for your school. Better? Yes. Better. Often times, dual-credit options can get expensive and annoying. Students may have to leave their school campus to go to the local community college where they learn from new teachers. As an administrator, you want to ensure the academic excellence for your students, but you also wish your students could take these classes from your own teachers. Explaining Faith to a Believing World

David Saxon is a professor in the College of Bible and Church Ministries. As the teacher of Baptist Heritage and a number of Bible electives, he enjoys interaction with a significant percentage of the ��ԭ�� student body. Read his article, originally published in the 2019 Advantage Magazine. American Spirituality A Gallup poll published this year reveals that church attendance in the United States has dropped in the last 20 by about 20%, resulting in the lowest percentage of church attenders since Gallup began collecting data in the 1930s. A natural conclusion might be that faith is failing in America: nearly one in five respondents indicated no connection to organized religion of any kind, a significant increase from any previous poll. Interestingly, though, Pew Research Center published poll results in 2017 that showed that 27% of Americans reported that they are “spiritual” but unaffiliated with any religion, a substantial increase over previous results. It seems that many Americans are redefining spirituality as a purely personal, existential experience that has no need of religious or ecclesiastical underpinnings.
