Dr. Sarah Urban, Dean of the School of Nursing, opened the service by explaining its purpose as both a time of reflection and a charge to graduate nurses. She commented on student growth from introductory nursing courses to accomplished seniors who had completed more than 200 hours of clinical work. Dr. Urban then introduced nursing faculty and expressed gratitude to clinical partners who provided students with unique learning opportunities. She thanked preceptors for their vital role in the seniors鈥 capstone experiences, often serving without remuneration. She warmly welcomed parents, siblings, grandparents, spouses, and friends who supported graduates throughout their nursing studies. Briefly presenting the time-honored tradition and significance of the pinning ceremony, Dr. Urban mentioned roots back to the twelfth century and of Florence Nightingale, who in the 1800s acknowledged excellence in her nursing school graduates, bestowing awards. Miss Elizabeth Stille, Director of the School of Nursing, welcomed family members, friends, and professionals from the community. She introduced the nursing faculty and thanked those in other departments across campus for their immeasurable impact on nursing graduates. She expressed appreciation for professional partners, without whom students could not fulfill clinical hours, and she acknowledged individual preceptors who provided practical capstone clinical experience, many of whom served without remuneration. She explained the significance and history of the pinning ceremony which celebrates graduate accomplishments and completion of their training that qualifies them professionally. The modern ceremony is reflective of Florence Nightingale who was awarded the Red Cross of Saint George by Queen Victoria in recognition of her service during the Crimean War. She later founded a nursing school, presenting graduates with badges of excellence and passing her flame (literally and figuratively) to graduates. Dr. Urban brings with her a wealth of experience and a deep commitment to nursing education based on a Christian worldview. She has more than fourteen years of dedicated service in the field of nursing. She is a Certified Nurse Educator with experience teaching Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN), and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) courses. Her career has included service as a registered nurse, nurse educator, and nursing department chair/director. Although much of her career as an educator has focused on teaching and leadership, Dr. Urban values both scholarship and research. While mentoring students, faculty, and fellow nurses, she has emphasized research-informed, critically reflective nursing practice which has helped her be successful in a variety of educational and clinical environments.
