Who will serve the King?鈥 Faculty-staff member Peter Wright played Frances Ridley Havergal鈥檚 well-known anthem, and as if in response to the questions it posed, the MBU Class of 2025 marched into the gymnasium for 海角原创鈥檚 56th Commencement Ceremony, held Friday, May 9. As the final graduates took their places, Dr. David Brown led all assembled in joyful adoration singing Charles Wesley鈥檚 triumphant lyrics, 鈥淩ejoice, the Lord is King,鈥 whereupon CEO Dr. Matthew Davis gave thanks to the Lord for His mercies which are 鈥渘ew every day,鈥 and for graduates and the lovely day in which to celebrate their accomplishment. He invoked further blessing, asking that commencement would indeed be the beginning of lives well-lived for His honor. When all were seated, Dr. Davis recognized categories of those present, beginning with the faculty, noting their exemplary leadership and recognizing their invaluable service. He asked parents of graduates (himself included) to stand, followed by grandparents and great-grandparents, noting that there were some in the graduating class who are third-generation graduates. He also led in applause for spouses. In gratitude, he recognized 海角原创 Board of Trustees members for the important service they render to the university, […]

Why 海角原创’s Music Program is Right for You /schools-colleges/why-the-maranatha-music-program-is-right-for-you/ Tue, 24 Dec 2019 22:13:06 +0000 Department of Music]]> /?p=101974 Before you walk the aisle on graduation day, you want to be prepared for the future, and聽海角原创’s music degree sets up students to succeed. After four years of education, you will be a well-rounded musician ready for wherever God leads: whether that鈥檚 pursuing graduate school, leading a church music ministry, arranging, or teaching.聽 海角原创’s unique music program can be best explained in two parts. First, the music core helps students grasp music concepts, a foundation that will help them in any field of music they pursue. Then, a student chooses two concentrations: string pedagogy, piano pedagogy, church music, arranging, performance, and general music. This system gives students both in-depth knowledge and diversity in their understanding of music. Is this unique degree structure working for our students? Junior Lorraine Yant certainly thinks so. She says, “MBU’s music program is flexible to allow the student to tailor their concentrations to best equip them for what they believe God has called them to.” The program gives every student both the basic instruction and specialized training to fulfill their life calling. Peter Holloway, a senior, adds, “The main way MBU’s music program prepares its students for success is through the opportunities it gives them. […]

Makayla Stevenson Senior Piano Recital Highlights /college-of-arts-and-sciencesdepartment-of-music/makayla-stevenson-senior-piano-recital-highlights/ Thu, 19 Dec 2019 22:15:31 +0000 Department of Music]]> /?p=102305 Makayla Stevenson recently performed her senior piano recital at 海角原创. Under the direction of her instructor June Brus, she prepared and practiced advanced piano selections for months. After graduating with her music degree with concentrations in Piano Pedagogy and Arranging, she plans to serve in ministry opportunities, take lessons furthering her piano skill, and eventually open her own studio. Mendelssohn: Concerto in G Minor First, Stevenson explains the history and themes of Mendelsson’s Concerto. “Felix Mendelssohn was one of the first major composers of piano and orchestral music after Beethoven. He was a Jewish Christian; and the craft, precision, and beauty of his music reflect a heart of love for his Savior. The theme of this movement is introduced by the orchestra, echoed in the solo piano entrance, and tossed between the parts throughout the piece. Mendelssohn鈥檚 writing conveys a sense of understated elegance, as technically challenging passages are overshadowed by the simple lyricism of the theme.” Beethoven: Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, “Path茅tique” Next, Stevenson’s selections include Sonata No. 8, or “Path茅tique,” by Ludwig van Beethoven. “This popular sonata is one of Beethoven鈥檚 early piano works and showcases the transition between the structure of the Classical […]

Margaret McMenamin Completes English Capstone /schools-colleges/margaret-mcmenamin-completes-english-capstone/ Thu, 19 Dec 2019 21:38:54 +0000 /?p=102261 Margaret McMenamin came to the end of her English capstone journey on Tuesday, December 10. In a room full of her close friends, professors, and family, Margaret spent 30 minutes explaining her research and ideas on Charles Dicken鈥檚 Great Expectations. Margaret gives us a look into the 10-month process of building her capstone.聽 聽 What is the English Capstone? “The English capstone is composed of three chapters. The first chapter focuses on a specific aspect of the author鈥檚 life, the second chapter is an analysis of what other critics have to say, and the final chapter is your thesis.” Margaret鈥檚 thesis was “Pip鈥檚 moral development in Great Expectations.” Here is how she chose Great Expectations. “I admit, choosing a novel was probably the most challenging part of the whole process. I began by compiling a list of my favorite books and as I started to think through what I like about each book and what I would write about, Great Expectations stood out. In particular, I was drawn to Pip because Pip is an everyman character. We relate to Pip because he is imperfect. But we also learn with Pip as he makes mistakes.” An Unexpected Challenge Of course, every […]

Journalism Students Prepare to Meet the Culture /schools-colleges/journalism-students-prepare-to-meet-the-culture/ Tue, 03 Dec 2019 19:26:25 +0000 /?p=101862 At 11 weeks into the semester, there鈥檚 no doubt that students are feeling the weight of daily homework assignments and the pull of Christmas vacation. But there鈥檚 still a lot to do before break. One group of students has been diligently working for MBU Professor Nathan Huffstutler this semester. A Class to Meet the Culture The Journalism class, one of the many classes Huffstutler teaches, explores the news industry through gathering material, organizing information and writing news stories. The course shows the importance of reporting and writing for the common people. It鈥檚 also a class that students of any major 鈥 whether they鈥檙e studying English education or biology 鈥 should take. Technology has dominated the world for decades, especially the news world. In response to this influence, writers have shifted their focus to writing for the public through blogs, online magazines and websites. Even with this shift, Huffstutler believes that writers can speak truth through the power of journalism. Christian writers specifically have a chance to share their voices in a world full of noise. 鈥淛ournalism is not a 鈥榳orldly鈥 vocation, but a full-time ministry for the Christian 鈥 it鈥檚 a way to be salt and light in our culture, […]

100% NCLEX Pass Rate for 2019 Nursing Graduates /schools-colleges/100-nclex-pass-rate-for-2019-nursing-graduates/ Tue, 22 Oct 2019 16:41:14 +0000 /?p=99502 A nursing major鈥檚 entire education is spent in preparation for one exam: the NCLEX. This exam is designed to test a student鈥檚 attentiveness, determination, and commitment in order to become a nurse. No doubt, the NCLEX is one of the biggest challenges a nursing major will face. Even so, MBU鈥檚 2019 nursing graduates met the challenge with confidence and achieved an incredible 100% NCLEX pass rate. Susan Rasmussen, the Nursing Program Director, gives us a closer look at what the NCLEX is and how it impacts the students as they prepare for the future. What is the NCLEX? The NCLEX is a national examination that all graduates of any registered nursing program must take in order to obtain licensure. The purpose of the NCLEX is to make sure the brand-new graduate knows enough to practice safely in any environment. For a class to accomplish it the first time at 100% is pretty remarkable. What does it take to pass the NCLEX? The NCLEX demands a lot from the students. Academically, students go through multiple courses that teach them how to take this type of test. Every nursing student actually takes an NCLEX prep course their final semester that catapults them […]
