Two New Concentrations: Art and Music
Due to widespread student interest, 海角原创 is offering two new concentrations this fall. While concentrations typically provide specialized study within a declared major, these new offerings are stand-alone programs that can be paired with any degree program.
Art
Geared toward those with little or no prior experience, the Art Concentration offers a balanced approach. It 鈥渂uilds a visual understanding,鈥 instructor Heidi Kartman explains, 鈥渘ot just technical skill. It emphasizes both thinking and seeing, not just creating.鈥
Coursework explores foundational concepts, design essentials, critical thinking skills from a biblical worldview, and color theory. Strategic studio projects provide experience in a variety of mediums, including drawing, calligraphy, and watercolor. These projects allow students to apply course concepts while developing confidence and ability.
Asked why a Christian college should offer art instruction, Heidi says, 鈥淚t will encourage students to engage in beauty and creativity, see the world as design-ordered and meaningful, and provide a new avenue for expression and stewardship of gifts.鈥 She also sees it as a platform for practical ministry possibilities, such as designing and printing gospel tracts with her students.
Classes for the fall are already full, but prospective students can begin planning for future enrollment here.
Music
Many students want to deepen their understanding and participation in music without pursuing a major or minor. The Music Concentration provides that opportunity, offering a flexible pathway for students to grow musically while complementing any field of study.
This 12-credit curriculum begins with three foundational courses, introducing students to core concepts, theory, history, aural skills, harmony and a biblical philosophy of music. Students complete the remaining credits through electives which allow students to tailor the program to their interests and goals.
According to Dr. Doug Bachorik, chair of the Department of Music, the benefits extend well beyond personal enjoyment. 鈥淚t gives them greater skill and knowledge for use in their local church.鈥 He adds, 鈥淲e spend a lot of time on what God鈥檚 Word says about music, which is going to guide their discernment and their musical choices in a proactive way.鈥
Whether engaged in congregational singing, instrumental presentations, or worship leadership, students gain skills that enhance ability to serve now and in the years ahead.
This concentration can be completed in five on-campus semesters. Explore more here.
