Announcing the 2022 Concerto Competition Winners

On Tuesday, October 25, ����ԭ��’s Music Department hosted its 2022 Concerto Competition in Burckart Hall. After deliberation from this year’s adjudicator, Will Brown, the final scores have been decided.

Winner

In first place is Charis Dwire, a sophomore with concentrations in String Pedagogy and Arranging. Accompanied by Hope Ostrander, she performed Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4, K. 218, Mvt. 1 Allegro on the violin.

According to Brown, “Charis Dwire commanded the room from the second she walked in. Poise, control, and sharp technical skills highlighted a truly memorable performance. Her cadenza, full of dynamic contrast and extended technique, capped off a triumphant showing. Her well-developed talent is a testament to her obvious work ethic, as well as the masterful pedagogy at MBU.”

For first place, Dwire earned $100.00 and the chance to perform her concerto with her accompanist at the April Band & Orchestra Concert.

Runner Up

In second place is Joel Montgomery, a senior with concentrations in Performance and Arranging. Accompanied by Hope Ostrander, he performed Arutiunian’s Trumpet Concerto in A^b Major on the trumpet.

According to Brown, Montgomery played with “good command,” utilized “nice dynamic contrast,” and maintained a “nice ensemble with the accompanist.” For second place, Montgomery earned $25.00.
