Beau Soir, Debussy

Beau Soir, or Beautiful Evening, is a classical art song inspired by the poem 鈥淏eau Soir鈥 by Debussy鈥檚 fellow Frenchman, Paul Bourget. The music features a two-against-three pattern between the viola melody and piano accompaniment.

聽The text, loosely translated, reads,

When at sunset the rivers are pink

And a warm breeze ripples the fields of wheat,

All things seem to advise content鈥

And rise toward the troubled heart;

Advise us to savor the gift of life,

While we are young and the evening fair,

For our life slips by, as that river does:

It to the sea – we to the tomb.

A La Nanita Nana, Traditional Spanish, Arr. Kelley

The title of this Spanish carol is translated, 鈥淟et Us Sing a Lullaby.鈥 It was written in the 19th century and is meant as a message to be sung to the Christ child. From a musical standpoint, this piece is unique in its tonality that switches back and forth from minor to major.
