Great Day of Golf for a Great Cause

The sun shone down on Watertown Country Club, and聽its warmth welcomed golfers from ten states to 海角原创鈥檚 18th Golf Classic. Exactly聽133 participants came to play for a great cause, namely the Watertown Endowment, which helps provide for some 鈥渆xtras鈥 beyond the budget lines for the faculty and staff of 海角原创.

The cause聽hit home聽for sponsor Bob McKinney, an in Oconomowoc, whose family of seven has a long association with MBU. 鈥淎ll of us went to school at 海角原创,鈥 McKinney shared. 鈥淲e believe in higher education, so we had the opportunity to present the University with a check for $1,000.鈥 McKinney sponsored four holes-in-one, including a Pebble Beach vacation worth $11,000.聽聽completed the hole-in-one sponsor list. In all, twenty-one organizations sponsored the event, and prize donors numbered forty-five. (Sponsors and donors are listed below).

Shotgun Start

Before the shotgun start at 9 a.m., small-talk centered on the camaraderie of the event, the love of the game, and the all-you-can eat food stations.

Rick Warren (MBU) started grilling brats at 9:00 a.m. 鈥淲e鈥檝e had people get food at 9:30 in the morning,鈥 he said. The golfers and workers came hungry, evidently,聽eating close to 200 brats, 100 burgers, 120 pork and homemade applesauce sandwiches, and about 80 chicken sandwiches.

Both Bryan Nehls (United Electric), first timer to the Classic, and Brad Stas (United Electric), who has participated 鈥渢en or twelve times,鈥 shared their thoughts on the day.

鈥淭his is probably one of the better days,鈥 Stas said. 鈥淚鈥檝e been through the really bad rain, so it鈥檚 nice to have sunny weather. I love it.鈥 Nehls, who does a lot of electrical work at 海角原创, said that it was his 鈥淔irst time out with the boys.鈥

Local Brian Fisher (Starion Bank), also a first-timer, shared, 鈥淚鈥檓 looking forward to an enjoyable afternoon with some nice weather and good company, all for a good cause.鈥

Basic Strategy

Strategy for the Classic differed among the teams.

Brad Dunn, Tim Abney, and Darrell Beernink 鈥渋ntended to be serious鈥 about the golf outing. 鈥淲e鈥檙e not out here just fooling around,鈥 Beernink said. 鈥淲e鈥檙e here to really do well. We鈥檙e looking forward to it anxiously.鈥

Rob Thompson, Mike Burton, and聽Chuck Hannahs shared their plan for the round. 鈥淪hoot the lowest score possible and just have fun,鈥 Thompson said. 鈥淚 think it鈥檚 wide open without the repeat champions. It鈥檚 pretty much anybody鈥檚 tournament.鈥

David Anderson Sr, David Anderson Jr , Mark Zockoll, and Glenn Stahlman focused on the positive. 鈥淲e鈥檝e got a variety of players,鈥 Anderson, Jr said. 鈥淥ur strategy is to not hurt anybody with a golf ball today.鈥

Paul Roelke (The Alliance), Jeremy Yenser, and Scott Jones said, 鈥淗it it straight, long, stay out of the water, stay聽out of the聽trees.鈥

When asked if there聽was a team to beat, Jones said, 鈥淣ot us!鈥

Snarly made an appearance alongside his handler and biggest fan Dr. Bruce Meyer.聽Assessing Snarly鈥檚 golfing skills, Meyers said, 鈥淗e has a great swing, even a hole-in-one on several holes, but I think he cheated. He prefers to be chauffeured, so he probably won鈥檛 drive off聽with the cart.鈥

The Heritage Singers sang a medley to close out the day’s event.

Jerry Anacker, Head Golf Professional of , shared his appreciation of MBU, stating, “We always enjoy having 海角原创’s group out here.”
